Optimize Your Health with Exercise Physiology

Exercise physiology is an allied health profession that uses exercise to improve health and well-being. With the option of one-on-one or small group settings, it offers a supportive environment to help you achieve your health goals safely and as quickly as possible.

An accredited exercise physiologist (AEP) is a university-qualified health professional specialising in clinical exercise interventions for various people and health issues. AEPs have extensive knowledge about the body's response to exercise. They can provide expert guidance and programming to safely and effectively increase strength and fitness.

Why Choose Exercise Physiology

People may benefit from seeing an exercise physiologist for a wide range of reasons. People who can benefit from clinical exercise interventions include those with:

  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Pulmonary disease
  • Metabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity
  • Neurological conditions
  • Musculoskeletal disease (including arthritis, osteoporosis/osteopenia, acute or chronic musculoskeletal issues)
  • Depression and other mental health conditions
  • Cancer
  • Pre and post-surgical rehabilitation
  • Exercise physiologists can also improve sports performance, prevent injury, and rehabilitate sports injuries.

Why See an Accredited Exercise Physiologist?

Clinical Expertise

Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) are experts in the human body and the role of exercise in health, fitness, and managing chronic conditions.

Tailored Exercise Programs

AEPs develop tailored exercise programs for people with disabilities, helping them build capacity for daily activities and live healthier lives.

Benefits of clinical exercise

  1. Individualised Exercise Programs: We develop tailored exercise programs that align with each client's goals and needs. These programs help manage diabetes, improve HbA1c levels, increase fitness, mobility, flexibility, strength, balance, and achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
  2. Group Classes: We offer supervised group classes consisting of 2 to 4 participants, all living with or at risk of diabetes. Each individual works on their personalised exercise program while benefiting from a supportive and encouraging group setting. Our exercise physiologist guides patients to ensure the safety and effectiveness of each session.
  3. Home Exercise Programs and Telehealth Options: For those unable to attend in-person sessions, we can develop a home exercise program tailored to their specific needs and goals. We also offer telehealth appointments to provide remote support and guidance for exercising at home.

What to Expect

To begin with, you will go through an individual assessment to determine your specific needs. This can include strength and fitness testing, range of motion testing, or performance testing with our specialised equipment. The type of testing will differ from person to person, depending on your current level of function and goals or treatment.

From here, you can continue with one-to-one sessions or attend one of our group classes led by our exercise physiologist. This will be discussed with you, and an appropriate treatment plan will be formulated.

Exercise Physiology Vs. Physiotherapy

Exercise physiologists and physiotherapists share a common goal: to improve their patient's health and well-being. Physiotherapists are experts in diagnosing, treating, and preventing physical injuries and disorders. On the other hand, exercise physiologists specialise in exercise and fitness. Simply put, an exercise physiologist will assess and manage your condition using exercise, whereas a physio can assess, provide a diagnosis and provide treatment using various hands-on skills, education and exercise.

Those who may benefit more from seeing physio may be those who:

  • Have a new injury that requires a diagnosis
  • Have an acute injury or have undergone orthopaedic surgery
  • Require hands-on treatment such as soft tissue release, mobilisation or dry needling

Those who may benefit more from seeing an exercise physiologist include people:

  • Recovering from an injury and wanting to get back into exercising
  • Suffering from a chronic condition such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease or osteoarthritis.
  • Have goals around weight management
  • Would like to increase general strength and fitness
  • Want to enhance sports performance
