Types of Shoulder Pain We Can Treat

Our physiotherapists have experience treating a wide range of shoulder conditions, including:

  • Rotator Cuff Injuries – covering tendinopathies, partial and full tears, and impingement syndrome. Whether it came on gradually or after a specific incident, rotator cuff problems are one of the most common causes of shoulder pain we see.
  • Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) – a progressive condition causing significant stiffness and pain, often developing slowly over months. Early physio intervention can help manage symptoms and speed up recovery.
  • Shoulder Instability & Dislocations – if your shoulder feels loose, gives way, or has previously dislocated, targeted strengthening and stability work is key to preventing it happening again.
  • Labral Injuries (SLAP Tears) – damage to the cartilage ring around the shoulder socket, often causing deep aching, clicking, or a sense of instability — particularly common in overhead athletes.
  • Bursitis & Shoulder Inflammation – irritation of the bursa (a small fluid-filled sac) can cause sharp, localised pain, particularly with lifting or reaching overhead. Hands-on treatment and load management can settle this quickly.
  • Postural & Overuse Shoulder Pain – often linked to desk work, repetitive tasks, or muscle imbalances. Very common and very treatable with the right combination of manual therapy and targeted exercise.
  • Arthritis-Related Shoulder Pain – gradual onset stiffness and aching in the shoulder joint, often worse first thing in the morning or after periods of rest.
  • Sports-Related Shoulder Injuries – from swimmers and throwers to contact sport athletes, we understand the demands of your sport and how to get you back to it safely.
  • Post-Operative Shoulder Rehabilitation – structured recovery following shoulder surgery, including rotator cuff repair, labral reconstruction, and shoulder stabilisation procedures.

*Even if your condition isn’t listed, we can assess and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Shoulder Pain FAQs

Q: Can physio help with a torn rotator cuff or post-surgery shoulder?
A: Yes – we combine hands-on treatment with guided rehab exercises to restore function.

Q: Do I need a scan?
A: Often not, but you can discuss this with your physio to decide if one may be needed.

Q: Should I get a cortisone injection?
A: We will generally aim to avoid you needing one of these if possible, due to a number of reasons. In some instances they are needed to help reduce symptoms, but we generally only recommend this pathway after trying a course of rehab and treatment first.

Q: Do I need a referral?
A: No referral is needed unless claiming through a 3rd party. You can book directly with our clinic.

Q: What treatments are used?
A: Our physios will tailor treatments to your needs, goals & what works best for you. This may include soft tissue massage, dry needling, electro dry needling, myofasical cupping, trigger point therapy, joint mobilisation, as well as a tailored exercise program.

Q: How long does recovery take?
A: Recovery depends on a number of factors such as the condition you have, how long you've been experiencing symptoms, the severity of symptoms, and your daily life & ability to make changes to aggravating activities. Your physio can provide a personalised plan and timeline tailored to you and your lifestyle.
