Why book this instead of going to your GP first

For musculoskeletal injuries like sprains, strains, suspected fractures, joint pain, physiotherapists are specifically trained in assessing and managing exactly this.

GPs are highly skilled generalists, and there are absolutely times a GP is the right call such as when you need strong pain relief, when care needs coordinating across multiple providers, or when you're going through a scheme like RTWSA or CTP. But for a straightforward musculoskeletal injury, the referral for a scan has often originated from a physio assessment in the first place, and the GP appointment becomes a step to get the paperwork signed, before you're sent right back to a physio for the actual management.

Physiotherapists haven't always had a straightforward way to refer patients directly for imaging while keeping Medicare rebates intact, so for a long time it's meant that patients still needed a GP visit purely to access the rebate, even when the physio had already identified exactly what scan was needed. This pathway changes that: same clinical assessment, same referral, same Medicare-eligible scan, without the extra appointment, wait, and cost in between.

A few reasons people choose this pathway:

• Wait times — GP appointments for a new issue can mean days or weeks of waiting; we can often see you sooner and get a referral moving the same day
• Cost — if your regular GP doesn't bulk bill, a consult booked solely for a referral is an out-of-pocket cost on top of whatever comes next

And importantly: the scan itself is still Medicare-eligible, because the referral is issued by a GP — so you get the same rebate you'd get going the traditional route, just without the extra appointment to get there.

If a specialist opinion is what's needed, we can arrange that referral directly too — it isn't limited to imaging.

Why this pathway is worth it

• It's fast. Once your referral is lodged, you're often contacted within 2 hours, and radiology can access your referral within hours of your appointment with us — not days or weeks.

• It can genuinely save you money. Without a bulk-billed referral, an MRI can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars up to $600 or more out of pocket, depending on the scan. Because this pathway's referrals are set up to allow bulk billing, you avoid that cost entirely in many cases.

• You skip an extra appointment. No separate GP visit just to get the paperwork sorted — and no extra GP consult fee on top, if your GP doesn't bulk bill.

• It doesn't stop at the scan. Once your results are back, if a specialist or surgeon opinion is needed, we can refer you directly — without another GP visit in between.
  

Referrals available:

Additional costs for referrals from your physio range from $70-$180, depending on the referral required. This covers the cost of the referral only. Where bulk billing is not possible, the scans/specialist appointments will still be Medicare eligible, however there many be additional costs depending on your individual situtation.

• Referral for X-ray, Ultrasound, or Steroid Injection (Bulk Billed)
  Covers a referral for standard imaging or a guided steroid injection, arranged and sent the same day.

• Referral for MRI (Bulk Billed where eligible)
  Covers a referral specifically for MRI, which involves a different sign-off process to other imaging types.

• Referral to See a Specialist (Medicare eligible)

  If a specialist or surgeon opinion is recommended, this covers the referral to get you there directly.

All referral types include Medicare rebate eligibility, and bulk billing wherever possible, depending on eligibility. Your physiotherapist will always try to let you know upfront if there are likely to be any extra costs.

Option 1 — 15-Minute Assessment & Referral — from $75

Includes:

• History taking and physical assessment
• Screening to rule out red flags
• Discussion of likely diagnosis
• If a referral is appropriate, this is arranged during your visit — the fee depends on what's needed (see referral types above), added to your $75 assessment fee on the day



Option 2 — Add-On to a Standard Appointment

If you'd like a full assessment, treatment, and rehab plan as well as a referral, book a Standard Initial Assessment (minimum 45 minutes, 60 minutes recommended). If your practitioner determines a referral is needed, this can be organised on the day — the relevant referral fee (see above) is added to your consult fee.

Private health rebates

The full appointment fee is eligible for private health rebates under standard physiotherapy item codes with participating health funds.

What happens next

1. You book online or call us — let us know it's for the Rapid Assessment & Referral pathway
2. Your physiotherapist assesses the injury and talks through what they're seeing
3. If a referral is appropriate, it's arranged during your visit — you'll have a short telehealth review with a GP to approve it, often within 2 hours
4. You book your scan (or specialist appointment) directly, using the approved referral
5. Once results are back, we'll help you interpret them and plan next steps — including a specialist referral at that point, if needed

When to go straight to the emergency department instead 🚨

• Loss of bladder or bowel control, or saddle numbness (possible cauda equina)
• Severe or progressive neurological symptoms (numbness, weakness, loss of coordination)
• Severe pain not settling with rest or over-the-counter pain relief
• Complete inability to weight bear
• Visible deformity or suspected open fracture
• Head injury with loss of consciousness, confusion, or worsening headache
• Chest pain, shortness of breath, or signs of a blood clot (calf swelling/pain with breathlessness)
• Signs of infection at an injury site (fever, hot, red, rapidly swelling joint)
• Uncontrolled bleeding

FAQs

What is this pathway, exactly?
It's a fast-tracked way to get a referral for imaging or a specialist, arranged during your physiotherapy appointment rather than requiring a separate GP visit. Your physio's assessment is used to lodge the referral, which is then reviewed and approved by a GP, usually within a couple of hours.

Do I still need my own regular GP?
Yes — this isn't a replacement for your regular GP or your ongoing care relationship with them. It's specifically for getting a referral sorted quickly when you already know, or strongly suspect, you need one.

Is bulk billing guaranteed?
Bulk billing is available wherever you're eligible, but eligibility can depend on the type of scan and your individual circumstances. Your physiotherapist will let you know if there's likely to be an out-of-pocket cost before anything is lodged.

What if my physio decides I don't actually need a referral?
That's a completely normal outcome. You'll still get a full explanation of what's going on and a plan for next steps — you're only charged the referral fee if a referral is actually arranged.

How quickly will I get my results?
This depends on the imaging provider and scan type, but because the referral itself is usually approved within a couple of hours, you can generally book your scan much sooner than the traditional GP-referral route.

Can I choose which radiology or imaging provider I go to?
Yes — once your referral is approved, you can take it to the imaging provider of your choice, the same as with any other referral.

What if I need a specialist straight away, not just imaging?
Let your physiotherapist know during your assessment — if it's clinically appropriate, a specialist referral can be arranged without necessarily waiting on imaging first.

Is this covered by my private health insurance?
The physiotherapy appointment itself is generally rebateable under standard physio item codes with participating health funds. Referral fees and any imaging costs are separate to this and depend on your fund and Medicare eligibility.

What if my injury turns out to be more serious than expected?
If anything concerning comes up during your assessment, your physiotherapist will guide you on the right next step, which may include referring you elsewhere urgently rather than proceeding with this pathway.
