How We Help Runners

Running is something we're genuinely invested in at Active Balance. Over the years we've worked with runners of all levels, from first-timers tackling a 3km fun run, to experienced athletes preparing for half marathons, and we've built our services around what runners actually need.

That means more than just treating injuries when they happen. It means helping you understand how your body moves, identifying the things that put you at risk before they become a problem, and building the strength and resilience to keep you running consistently.

What we offer runners:

Running Assessments

A thorough physiotherapist-led assessment of your technique, strength, movement patterns, and injury risk. We use VALD technology and treadmill video analysis to gather objective data and give you a clear picture of how you're moving and what needs attention. Whether you're managing a current injury or simply want to run more efficiently, a running assessment is the starting point.

Strength Training for Runners
Strength work is one of the most effective things a runner can do to reduce injury risk and improve performance — and one of the most commonly skipped. We design individualised runner strength programs targeting the areas that matter most: glutes, hips, calves, and the kinetic chain that keeps you efficient and absorbing load well over longer distances.

Your program is supervised and progressed by your physio, and can be delivered in whatever way works best for you. If you'd like to train onsite, our fully equipped rehab gym is available for both rehabilitation and injury prevention work. If you'd prefer to train at home or at your own gym, we'll build your program around the equipment you have access to — most of what runners need can be done effectively with minimal kit.

We also offer Clinical Mat Pilates classes for runners looking to build core strength, improve movement control, and address the stability and mobility demands that running places on the body. Small group sessions, physio-led, and suitable for all levels.

Hands-On Treatment
Regular hands-on treatment is something a lot of runners undervalue until they start doing it consistently. Whether it's physiotherapy, myotherapy, or massage, manual treatment helps manage the cumulative load that running places on your body — keeping tissue quality high, addressing tightness and imbalances before they develop into injuries, and supporting recovery between sessions.

We offer a range of treatment options depending on what your body needs:

  • Physiotherapy — assessment-led treatment targeting movement restrictions, joint stiffness, and musculoskeletal issues that may be affecting your running or putting you at risk
  • Myotherapy — focused soft tissue work addressing muscle dysfunction, trigger points, and chronic tension patterns that build up over a training block
  • Remedial and deep tissue massage — targeted treatment to reduce muscle soreness, improve tissue extensibility, and help you recover and train consistently

Many of our runners build regular treatment into their training routine, not just when something goes wrong, but as an ongoing part of staying on top of their body. If you're running regularly, particularly in a build toward an event, it's one of the most effective things you can do to stay injury-free.

Injury Management and Rehabilitation
If something has already gone wrong, we'll assess it properly, identify what's driving it, and build a plan to get you back running. We treat the full range of running-related injuries — from shin splints and tendinopathies to stress fractures and ITB problems — and wherever possible we keep you moving while we address the cause.

Recovery Support
Our Recovery Zone gives you access to Normatec compression boots and infrared sauna — tools that support tissue recovery, reduce soreness, and help you absorb training load more effectively. Available as part of our running packages or as a standalone service.

Why Runners Choose Active Balance

  • We use objective data, not guesswork. VALD ForceDecks and Dynamo testing means every assessment and progress check is grounded in real numbers — so you can see exactly where you're improving and what still needs work.
  • We treat the cause. A thorough assessment looks at the whole picture: how you move, where load is going, and what's driving any pain or inefficiency. That's what leads to lasting results rather than short-term relief.
  • We keep you running. Wherever clinically appropriate, we build programs around your training rather than pulling you out of it. Complete rest is rarely the answer.
  • We have everything under one roof. Assessment, strength training, rehab, recovery, and soon sports nutrition — all available at our St Marys clinic, with a fully equipped gym and Recovery Zone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be injured to come and see you?
Not at all. Many of the runners we work with come in without an active injury, to improve their efficiency, reduce their risk ahead of a race, or simply to understand how their body is moving.

My injury keeps coming back every time I ramp up my training. What's going on?
This is one of the most common things we hear. Rest resolves pain, but it doesn't address the underlying cause. If the load or movement issue that created the injury hasn't been corrected, the problem will return as soon as training resumes. A thorough assessment looks at why the injury happened, not just where, and addresses those drivers directly.

Will I have to stop running during my rehab?
In most cases, no. Wherever it's clinically appropriate, we will build your program around your running rather than pulling you out of it. Complete rest is rarely the only or best option, and we'll always be clear about our reasoning.

I have a race coming up soon. Is it too late to book?
Not necessarily. Get in touch and tell us your timeline — we'll be honest about what we can realistically achieve and work with whatever window you have. Even in the final weeks before a race there's often meaningful work to be done.

Do you work with beginner runners?
Absolutely. We work with runners of all levels and experience — from people who have never run before to competitive athletes. Our programs and assessments are tailored to where you're at and what you're working toward.
