Deep Tissue Massage Adelaide

Strong, targeted relief for tight, overworked muscles. If you prefer a massage that really gets into the muscles, deep tissue massage is designed for you.

Unlike general massage, this is a more focused and results-driven treatment, ideal for people who feel constantly tight, restricted, or sore.

At Active Balance, we take the time to listen & understand what’s going on, not just focus on where it hurts. From there, we will tailor your treatment to help you feel better, move more comfortably, and get back to doing what you enjoy.

What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Unlike relaxation or remedial massage, deep tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.

Using slow, controlled pressure and targeted techniques, it helps to release stubborn tightness and improve how your muscles feel and move.

It’s a great option if you prefer a firm, focused treatment that works into specific areas of tension.

What to Expect From Your Deep Tissue Massage Appointments

We want you to feel comfortable, informed, and confident from the moment you walk in.

Initial Appointment (60–90 minutes)

The first session is all about understanding what’s going on and setting the right direction.

This typically includes:

  • A discussion about your symptoms, history, and goals
  • Assessment of movement, strength, and the affected area
  • Hands-on treatment tailored to you
  • Clear explanation of what we’re finding and why
  • Simple exercises or advice to support your recovery

We take the time to properly assess things in your first session so we’re not just treating symptoms, but helping you move forward with a clear plan.

Follow-Up Appointments (30–90 minutes)

Follow-up sessions focus on building on your progress and continuing your treatment.

Depending on your needs, this may include:

  • Ongoing hands-on treatment
  • Progressing or adjusting your exercises
  • Addressing any new or remaining areas of tightness or discomfort
  • Checking in on how you’re responding to treatment

These sessions are more focused and efficient, while still tailored to how you're progressing.

Appointment Types & Timing

We offer flexible appointment lengths depending on your needs:

  • Initial consultations: 60–90 minutes
  • Follow-up sessions: 30, 45, or 60 minutes

If you're unsure which to book, we recommend starting with a 60-minute initial appointment so we have enough time for a thorough assessment and treatment.

What You Might Feel After Your Session

After treatment, it’s common to feel:

  • Looser and more mobile
  • Less tight or restricted
  • Tenderness on areas that have been worked on
  • Mild soreness (similar to post-exercise), which usually settles within 24–48 hours

We’ll guide you on what to expect and how to get the most out of your treatment between sessions.

FAQs

Does deep tissue massage hurt?
It can feel intense, particularly over tight or sensitive areas, but it should always stay within a level you’re comfortable with. You should never feel like you need to tense up or push through pain — your therapist will adjust pressure based on your feedback throughout the session.

Will I be sore after the treatment?
It’s common to experience some mild soreness for 24–48 hours, similar to how your muscles might feel after exercise. This usually settles quickly and is often followed by improved movement and reduced tightness.

How is deep tissue massage different from remedial massage?
Deep tissue massage is typically slower, more focused, and uses firmer pressure to target deeper muscle layers.
Remedial massage is more adaptable in pressure and technique, and is often used for general tension, maintenance, and overall muscle health.

How often should I book a deep tissue massage?
This depends on your lifestyle and goals:

  • High training load or tightness → weekly or fortnightly
  • Maintenance → every 3–6 weeks

We can help guide you based on your response to treatment.

What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to expose that region, but your comfort and privacy are always prioritised.
