Tom McCarthy
Myotherapist & Athletic Rehabilitation Therapist
Bachelor of Science (Sport Rehabilitation & Athletic Therapy)
Tom comes to us from the south west coast of Ireland, where he completed his Bachelor of Science in Sports Rehabilitation and Athletic Therapy before heading out to gain experience working as a therapist across America, Canada and Australia. That international background has given Tom exposure to a genuinely broad range of athletes, injuries and treatment environments. from high-performance sport to everyday rehabilitation.
Tom moved from Melbourne to Adelaide as part of a regional visa program, but the city (and its beaches and wineries) quickly made the decision to stay an easy one. He's now very much a permanent fixture at Active Balance, and has built a loyal following of clients who appreciate his thorough, hands-on approach.
His special interest is lower back pain, an area he treats with a combination of manual therapy techniques, corrective exercises and patient education. Tom believes strongly that helping clients understand their injury is just as important as the hands-on treatment, an informed client heals better and stays better. Outside the clinic, Tom is actively involved in Gaelic football and soccer, both as a player and as a therapist for local teams.
Conditions tom loves to treat:
Tom is a great fit for active people — runners, footballers, gym-goers and anyone with a sporting background — as well as workers managing lower back pain from physically demanding jobs. His international experience means he's equally comfortable with competitive athletes and everyday people who simply want to move without pain.
- Lower back pain (acute and chronic)
- Sports injuries — sprains, strains, muscle tears
- Neck and shoulder pain
- Hip and gluteal pain
- Hamstring and quadricep injuries

tom's treatment approach:
Tom takes a hands-on, evidence-based approach drawing on deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release, dry needling and corrective exercises. He focuses on understanding the root cause of each client's pain rather than just settling symptoms, and combines treatment with practical education so clients know what to do between sessions. His background in athletic therapy means he's particularly well-versed in load management, movement assessment and sport-specific rehabilitation.
Tom is available for appointments Monday to Friday.
