Knee Conditions We Treat

Our physiotherapists are experienced in assessing and treating a wide range of knee conditions, including:

  • ACL Injuries & Reconstruction Rehabilitation – one of the most significant knee injuries, whether you're managing a partial tear conservatively or working through recovery after ACL reconstruction surgery. We follow evidence-based rehab protocols and use return-to-sport testing to make sure you're truly ready to get back.
  • Meniscus Tears – the meniscus acts as a shock absorber in the knee, and tears can cause pain, swelling, locking, or giving way. Both conservative management and post-surgical rehab are things we manage regularly.
  • Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome (Runner's Knee) – pain around or behind the kneecap, often worse with running, stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting. Very common and very treatable with the right approach to load management and strength training.
  • Patellar Tendinopathy (Jumper's Knee) – pain at the base of the kneecap caused by overload of the patellar tendon. Common in jumping and running sports, and best managed with a structured loading program.
  • IT Band Syndrome – a common overuse injury in runners causing sharp pain on the outside of the knee. Responds well to a combination of hands-on treatment and targeted hip and knee strengthening.
  • Knee Osteoarthritis – gradual onset pain, stiffness, and swelling in one or both knees. Exercise therapy and load management are among the most effective treatments for knee OA, and we're experienced in helping people manage it well.
  • MCL & LCL Sprains – ligament injuries on the inner or outer side of the knee, often from contact sport or a twisting mechanism. Graded rehabilitation gets you back safely and reduces the risk of re-injury.
  • Bursitis & Knee Inflammation – irritation of the fluid-filled sacs around the knee causing localised swelling and tenderness. Hands-on treatment and activity modification can settle this effectively.
  • Osgood-Schlatter Disease – a common cause of knee pain in growing adolescents, particularly those involved in running and jumping sports. Very manageable with the right guidance around load and activity.
  • Post-Operative Knee Rehabilitation – structured recovery following knee surgery including ACL reconstruction, meniscus repair, partial or total knee replacement, and cartilage procedures.

*Even if your condition isn’t listed, we can assess and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Our Approach to Knee Pain Relief

Every knee is different. We build your treatment plan around what's actually causing your pain — your anatomy, your activity levels, and your goals.

Step 1: Thorough Assessment & Hands-On Care

We start with a detailed assessment to identify the source of your knee pain — whether that's a tendon, ligament, joint, or movement control issue. Early treatment focuses on reducing pain and swelling using hands-on techniques including massage, dry needling, joint mobilisation, and taping.

Step 2: Active Rehab & Strengthening

Once your pain is under control, we move into targeted rehabilitation in our on-site gym. Building strength through the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and hip stabilisers is essential for long-term knee health — and it's a stage we take seriously.

Step 3: Return to Sport & Long-Term Prevention

For those returning to sport or high-demand activities, we use structured return-to-sport testing and progressive loading to make sure your knee is genuinely ready. We also provide home exercise programs and lifestyle advice to keep you moving well beyond your last session.

Knee Pain FAQs

Q: Can physiotherapy help my knee pain? Yes — the vast majority of knee conditions respond well to physiotherapy. Whether your pain is from an acute injury, overuse, or a degenerative condition, we can help reduce your pain and build the strength and stability needed for long-term recovery.

Q: Do I need a doctor's referral? No referral is needed. You can book directly with our clinic. If your treatment needs to be covered by Medicare, Return to Work SA, or CTP insurance, a referral or care plan may be required — give us a call and we'll help you sort it out.

Q: Should I rest my knee or keep moving? It depends on the condition and the stage of injury. In most cases, complete rest is not the answer — but neither is pushing through significant pain. Your physio will guide you on what to do and what to avoid at each stage of your recovery.

Q: I've been told I have a torn ACL — do I need surgery? Not necessarily. Many ACL injuries can be managed conservatively with a well-structured rehabilitation program, depending on the extent of the tear and your activity goals. Your physio can discuss your options with you and work alongside your GP or specialist to determine the best path forward.

Q: What treatments do you use for knee pain? Depending on your assessment, we may use remedial massage, dry needling, electro dry needling, joint mobilisation, taping, and a personalised strengthening and rehabilitation program. Treatment is always guided by what your knee actually needs.

Q: How long will recovery take? It depends on the type and severity of your injury. Something like a mild ligament sprain may settle in a few weeks, while an ACL reconstruction or total knee replacement recovery can take six to twelve months. Your physio will give you a realistic timeline and milestone-based plan from the start.
